Based in New Orleans, Louisiana, Southern Theatres L.L.C. has only been in business since the 2000s and already owns The Grand Theatre, AmStar Cinemas and Movie Tavern, and operates 433 screens at 39 theaters in New Orleans, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas. In 2013, Southern acquired the movie chain Movie Tavern, to make it the eighth largest chain in the U.S. The partnership “combines the magic of movies with the pleasure of dining.” MovieTavern was founded in 2001, while Southern was founded in 2003 by George Solomon. Movie Tavern’s CEO in 2013 was John Hersker.
