After returning to Russia, Count Alexander Rostov (Ewan McGregor) is spared immediate execution but is banished by a Soviet tribunal to an attic room in the luxurious Hotel Metropol to live out for the remainder of his days as a prisoner. He makes friends with Nina, a 10-year-old girl who also lives in the hotel. She has a key to open every door, where they discover rooms behind rooms, and doors behind doors.
