Jason Momoa shaves head to protest single-use plastics

Jason Momoa has his head shaved in HawaiiIn protest of single-use plastics, Aquaman star Jason Momoa had his long locks cut off and his head shaved. He made a video of the event and posted it to his Instagram account, @prideofgypsies.

At one point in the video he holds up two braids that the hairdresser had just cut off, saying that he'd never felt the wind on that particular area of his head.

"I'm tired of these plastic bottles. We've got to stop," he pleads. "Plastic forks, all that s--t. It just goes into our land. It goes into our ocean. I'm here in Hawaii right now and just seeing things in our ocean, it's just so sad. So please, anything you can do to eliminate single-use plastics in your life, help me."

He holds up a metal water bottle and adds, "Plastic bottles are ridiculous. Bring your canteen, or now everyone's making the aluminum [water bottles], which is fantastic."

The Aquaman sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, is scheduled to release in theaters on December 25, 2023. ~Alexandra Heilbron

What does shaving his head do for the plastic situation? Why not organize a team to pick up plastic from the beaches of Hawaii, if he saw plastic there?

I’m addicted to soda. How am I supposed to rid single use plastic when that’s what it comes in? Can I get the factory to send me a huge tub and like a water cooler? Yes there’s soda stream but it’s not the same.

I don't get it. What has shaving his head have to do with his protest against water bottles?? We need water bottles especially for emergencies. Mr. Momoa I don't know if you are keeping up with the current news in Minneapolis residents there have no water and the water they do receive in their homes are advised to boil it before use. Therefore residents are still using bottled water and need this bottled water on a daily basis. They are not as privileged as you to behave so childishly in shaving their heads on something so childish and frivolous. In the near future I will think twice before watching any of your films.

It’s not the plastic that’s the problem, it is the people who litter with it

@Dani & @JT: Shaving his hair is a shocking move for many people, so this "personal sacrifice" raises the awareness he needs to spread a message for a cause that is close to his heart. @J oneil: His message is to encourage to make a choice when the option is available. Perhaps an option could be purchasing soda in a larger bottle, and carry smaller servings in a washable container (be careful about it carbonation when opening it! 😝), which could also save on your budget too! @Cathy O: It is an unfortunate sight to see someone littering in this day and age! I don't get it at all, and the carelessness of someone's mindset that their actions mean nothing is one message that definitely needs to change, because even the smallest contributions add up to great changes 🤗🤗

@jj - nice rebuttles. -Exactly, it's like here in BC banning the single use plastic bags. People stick with one thing and can't see the bigger picture (ie: just talking about how will they get their pop when it only comes in plastic bottles). It all starts with something. Here, it's plastic bags and plastic straws being banned. Theres a city bylaw which makes stores charge an extra .10 or .25 (whatever it is) for bags so it encourages people to bring reusable canvas bags. I literally saw what I always have seen online videos where a turtle was caught in the plastic rings of a 6-pack, but in my case I saw the plastic rings floating in the water near the shore, just ready to strangle sea life. I've seen the plastic bag floating in the water looking like a jelly fish. It's more than just water and pop bottles. Look at P.E.I., they banned plastic bottles years ago. You can only drink from glass bottles. Cities need more recycling programs. Like the comment above, people discard them on the side of the road...save them and give to a recycling facility and get back some $$$ !!

It’s almost always good to champion a cause like this, but seeing that Canada contributes less than 1% of the garbage in the oceans, it is a bit of a waste here.
