Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman, who was previously seeking the death penalty against Nick Reiner for the murders of his parents, Hollywood director Rob Reiner and producer Michele Singer Reiner, announced yesterday that the maximum penalty Reiner can now receive is life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Hochman discussed the possibility of removing the death penalty with Reiner's siblings before making the decision. “In deciding whether or not the DA’s office was going to seek the death penalty, we have gone through a rigorous review where we look at the aggravating factors as well as the mitigating factors, where we have spoken to the victims’ family, we have spoken to prosecutors, law enforcement, and worked with the most senior people in the district attorney’s office,” Hochman said Tuesday. Reiner, 33, has pleaded not guilty.
“Nick has a serious mental illness and a long history of struggling with self-medication,” Reiner's attorney, Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene, said in a statement. “His circumstances are a tragic example of how difficult it can be for people experiencing significant mental health challenges to access and navigate the treatment and support they need.”
Rob Reiner was awarded a posthumous Emmy on Monday for outstanding guest actor in a comedy series for his role in 2025 on the series The Bear.
Jamie Lee Curtis fought through tears as she closed the “In Memoriam” section with a tribute to Rob and Michele Reiner at the 2026 Emmy Awards.
“He was generous and kind and funny as hell and a friend to all, and we all miss Rob and Michele and all those we lost this year,” she said.
Rob and Michele were stabbed to death in their Southern California home in late 2025. Their youngest son, Nick Reiner, who lived with his parents, was arrested the same day in connection with the murders.

My opinion is one of sadness and justice denied!!! I am soo tired of these people who murder and then claim mental illness to get away with their crimes!!! This person had 2 loving caring parents who gave their son the best life and yet, for no reason, he just decided one night to play GOD and take their precious lives in a most cruel and heinous way, and he knew what he was doing when he did it!!! If any murderer deserves the death penalty it is Nick Reiner, and I don't even believe in the death penalty, but this cold blooded unrepenting evil monster, is the exception to the rule!!! Why should he be breathing and eating while his 2 wonderful parents are laying in their graves, prematurely, because of his cruel & selfish acts??? I hope Nick Reiner burns in hell for all eternity for what he has done and even that is too good for him!!! He is the devil incarnate and should be punished as such...pure evil and violent...too bad he didn't kill himself instead...we'd be better off!!!
I am with Marilyn on this one. I did not know Michelle but I assume she was a great person. Rob Reiner would have not selected an ordinary person to be his partner. We all have been deprived of so much laughter and creativity by this terrible act Nick Reiner does not deserve to spend his life anywhere his life should be over as his parents lives are over !
menedez brothers part 2 just after the money sorry they earned it you lived a life of luxury and you want the inheritance rot in the worst place the can send you you you little prick
The young man had/has a history of mental illness and was self medicating himself. I think some people are not reading the article. I wish people would stop jumping to conclusions and make quick judgment. Nobody knows what he is dealing with nor what happened behind closed doors in their home. Nobody knows what medications he was taking as it could’ve also contributed to what happened. There are factors we just don’t know. It’s sad it happened. Could it have been prevented? We don’t know. We will have to wait and see what happens next year at the trial.
Morally vacant fools like Bushwah will be pleased
