Debuting in first place was Verity, starring Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett, with an opening haul of $32.6 million.
Resident Evil finished second in its third weekend, earning another $12.5 million for a domestic total of $124.9 million.
The Brad Pitt survival thriller Heart of the Beast took third place with $11 million, bringing its two-week total to $38.4 million.
Coming in fourth was Primetime, starring Robert Pattinson, which earned $8 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $34.1 million.
Rounding out the top five was Digger, starring Tom Cruise, which debuted with $8 million.
