Born in St. Louis, Missouri to musical parents, Bakula started a rock band by the fourth grade and had even written lyrics for a couple of songs. He later sang with the St. Louis Symphony.

Bakula launched his acting career as a teen in regional theater and as a stage actor specializing in musical comedy.

After studying Law at the University of Kansas, he made his Broadway debut in Marilyn: An American Fable. He started showing up regularly on television as a guest star on such series as My Sister Sam and Designing Women during the 1980s. He then hit a dry spell with a number of unsuccessful shows.

He is perhaps best known for his five seasons on the acclaimed series Quantum Leap, which focuses on a man who travels from one body to the next throughout history in order to find his own. The role earned him a Golden Globe for Best Actor in addition to four consecutive Emmy nominations. He also executive produced and starred in the series Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and he produced and starred in the telefilm The Bachelor's Baby. From 2001 to 2005 he played Captain Jonathan Archer on UPN's sci-fi series, Enterprise.

Although he has worked extensively in television, Bakula has also had a number of feature film appearances. Bakula made his film debut starring opposite Kirstie Alley in Sibling Rivalry (1990), followed by films like L.A. Story (1991), My Family (1995), Lord of Illusions (1995), American Beauty (1999), Above Suspicion (2000) and The Informant! (2009).

Bakula is married to second wife, actress Chelsea Field. He has two children, Chelsy and Cody, with first wife Krista Neuman, and two children, Wil and Owen, with his current wife. He divides his time between Los Angeles and a farm in New York.
