Ryan Gosling gives a good performance, given the vapid script. Special effects are unable to make up for the flimsy story that defies logic. Many alligators come over the transom...one small example is the inexplicable manner in which full communication is established with Ryan's space buddy Rock. The science is all sketchy. Sad.
The neg reviewers are a joke. Worse movie you've seen? Not transformers? Or Lost in Translation? If you have even a mild enjoyment of sci-fi, you'll enjoy the movie. If you loved the book, you'll enjoy the movie. It's a closer adaptation than the Martian was and the effects are almost entirely practical. If your biggest issue is that a person in low-gravity space doesn't use a comb, you have bigger problems than this movie.
I loved every bit of Hail Mary. Great acting, story and everything. I do not care for the theater (noisy others, seat being kicked), but I am so glad that I saw this on the Big Screen
Serious subject matters which could be challenging to some young adults, teens are raised including the end of the world, death, suicide, forced compliance by government employees of an unwanted medical shot, stuck in space, unable to return to home. Otherwise, a sort of family friendly sometimes light-hearted movie: no swear words, no nudity, no sex, no drugs (except an unbelievable brief mention by an astronaut of a concoction of sorts she wishes to die from). Long movie. I like Ryan Gosling, the main actor, who also serves as a producer of the movie. Hollywood still must be doing something right if they can make movie goers cry over a rock. Good ending.
Just so you complainers know. There was no AI or computer CGI used at all not even once all the money was spent for real sets for a real experience. Too bad you can’t appreciate.
First of all too long and frankly because of that became boring. Lots of special effects like many sci-fi movies. Nothing that special though. Ryan did a good job given the material he was given. If I knew then what I know now….I would not have gone to the movie. Should have looked at the trailer.
I will say that I’m not a science fiction movie lover, but this was a story of connection and friendship. It delivered in that regard. Ryan Gosling was amazing, as was his costar. I just loved it.
Same plot twist as Adam Sandler space movie from last year. Too long.
If I thought Wuthering Heights was the worst movie so far this year - I had not counted on seeing HAIL MARY chaos. Gads -geez- how boring, I could not wait for this farce to be thru so I could go home. It's downright beyond horrible. Talking to a rock makes good sense I guess. UGH
I really liked The Martian, so I thought I would like this movie and I was not disappointed! I was never a fan of Ryan Gosling until I saw Lars and the Real Girl and then Barbie and The Grey Man. He is the obvious centre of the film and does a fantastic job. The woman who recruited him was as steely cold as she needed to be. There was just the right amount of humour and tears. Even if you don't understand the science, they absolutely tried to dumb it down for us and it made sense. From learning to speak with the alien, to trying to figure out the problem, they did a great job of speeding up the process for us but showing us it did take quite a bit of time to do all the things required. I think whoever is saying negative comments is likely just a bot trying to drive down the review score. See for yourself.
To all the fake reviews . Its funny when you read the negative reviews , they all seem to have sleep disorders . all of them discuss sleeping or hard to keep awake. Movie wonderful, well written, directed , and Ryan is the heart of the movie postive message , how could you tear it down ??
Yes, it was long. But it was all the good things people are saying: funny, beautiful, engaging, strange (in a good way), imaginative. I loved the music!
Really imaginative , funny, great story line, great acting. Had so much fun watching the movie.
If Hollywood would make movies like that, we all would go all the time
On the fence with this one. It's getting 4 stars for the humor and the music. The story was kinda weak and boring. The soundtrack was almost as good as the ones from October Sky, and Gladiator, and anything from John Williams.
Just seems like the worst movie I've ever seen. So AI generated, so computerized, so gosh awful. No story line to follow, so unlike RYAN GOSLING to be seen in a terrible movie like this. Wish I'd listened to reviews, always read reviews aw most are spot on. Save you $$$ this one sucks to high heaven.
Just really bad, and I normally like anything that Ryan gosling is in.
waste of money not worth for someone to sit over 2 hours not know what people seen to rate high its a total bust
It was weak on hard science but a welcome to the good side of humanity. Refreshing that there was no kill kill kill in most movies these days. A little high brow for most.
It would be nice if those "nay"-sayers actually provided some solid reasons why they disliked the movie rather than just some generic statements… Anyway, a decent film combining sci-fi with dark comedy, indeed a bit of deja-vu with Interstellar or The Martian (with a hint of Don‘t Look Up). Rocky the alien is cute and reminded me a bit of the rock monster in Galaxy Quest. Also, the physics of a polymorphism of Xenon being a gas versus a solid is quite interesting. So, a bit of occasional slapstick mixed with more serious topics (like saving the world from solar extinction), overall a good watch.
An insult to people’s intelligence. Lazy script & plot. 2 1/2 hours of agony.
This film is not for everyone. It's Sci-fi done right, strange concepts and adventures with space pet rock. I get it not everyone likes rocks, some people be sand people. Solid film.
Andy Weir writes hard science fiction that begins with a fictional premise and lets the science run from there. This is a complex plot with many flashbacks that reveal the central character’s gradually returning memories, I probably benefited from having read the book in advance. The evolution of the relationship between Grace and Rocky was fun and sometimes moving to watch. Also enjoyed the nods to other SF movies. HG Wells, call your office.
Very entertaining! Ryan Gosling was great in this! Maybe a little bit too long, but we really enjoyed it! The friendship with Rocky was fun and endearing!
how awful and boring this near three hour long film takes to let you escape from the theatre
Beautiful film.
Beautiful film.
It’s refreshing to come across a movie that the whole family can enjoy. No swearing, no gratuitous sex and violence. The story has heart and we enjoyed the humour and the drama.
HALF decent Pop Culture kids stuff- not a true cinematic experience-the trailers give you all you need to know. All THREE of them? Ask yourself why?
Should have trusted the reviews - it was as horrible as most of U wrote. Went there to make up my own mind and YEP - was as bad as they said it was. Oh well, just something to do on a Friday night
I liked the few changes from the book, and the way the action kept moving. The characters were also done well. Not a whole lot to dislike.
I liked it more when it was called INTERSTELLAR.
Funny movie with a bit of dark humor. I think I was smiling the whole time, with a lot of laughter around the audience. Also a nice story about interstellar friendship and collaboration. Good design with the main story in the presence on the ship, interlaced with the backstory on earth. Sound and score are great with good special effects.
We did enjoy the first hour but then it turn to be a boring movie and we should have walked out. Had not been at the movies since the pandemic and as seniors it was very very expensive and disappointing.

Was this a COMEDY portrayed as a Space Adventure? If so, a few laughs were all I give it and that little alien was so stupid. I about left one hour into this horribly animated, computerized movie.. I can't believe Ryan Gosling lowered himself to be in this. The only reason I gave it two stars was for the music which was the only thing good about this experience. What a waste of time and money.
Masterpiece, like actually. It’s beautifully done, the writing, the directing and the visuals?, it’s eye candy Really hoping Ryan Gosling gets nominated as this is his chance to actually get the award, the guys that good. Also what’s with the reviews on here?, dude you gotta accept that people enjoyed this movie lol. Like this is the highest rated film of the year so far.
The one star is that RYAN GOSLING is nice to look at. The story is ridiculous, boring and I fell asleep (3) times during the movie. I can't believe the long waited for HAIL MARY was the worst movie by far I've seen yet, Too computerized, no story line to follow and just blah blah blah
Project Hail Mary starring Ryan Gosling. is the WORST movie I have ever watched in my entire life. I wish I could ask for my money back. I wanted to walk out of the theatre. The plot was dumb and disjointed. The acting was not convincing. The dialogue was dumb. It was boring. I don’t think this movie will enhance Ryan Gosling’s career as an actor. I can forseee SNL creating some very humorous skits to mock this movie. SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY. One final thought: Ryan Gosling should invest in a comb or hair brush. lol.
